Youth Leadership 2024
Ten high school students from Derry Area High School, Southmoreland High School, Franklin Regional High School, Greensburg Salem High School, Penn-Trafford High School, Norwin High School, and Yough High School participated in the Leadership Westmoreland Youth Academy from June 17-21, 2024. Now in its sixth year, this week-long experience is supported by a grant from the Westmoreland/Fayette Workforce Investment Board. During the program, students visited various locations in Westmoreland County, engaging with leaders to learn about their leadership journeys. These facility tours exposed students to diverse career opportunities. This year’s visits included the Westmoreland County Courthouse, General Carbide, Fort Ligonier, and UPMC East.
The mornings were dedicated to traveling around the county, while the afternoons were filled with sessions led by professional presenters and industry experts. These sessions focused on leadership, self-development, and self-awareness topics. Students also participated in group activities, such as a leadership-themed scavenger hunt and an interactive session with the Westmoreland County Beekeepers Association.
A big thank you to everyone who encouraged and supported this year’s exceptional group of students.

Testimonials
“I want to let you know that our daughter absolutely loved being part of this Youth Academy last week. She was so excited to tell her father and I every detail of everything she did each day and genuinely wants to explore every topic and every career even further. We are so pleased with what she learned and how much this program motivated and inspired her. “

“Thank YOU so much! It was a fantastic experience for her (and her brother before her. He was in the very first camp). She came home with a plethora of new career ideas and "side gigs" she can do throughout her life. She really loved the bees and now wants to raise them herself! Thanks again for a great experience.”
Derry Area Parent
“Thank you for an outstanding week. Our son absolutely loved it and said he was bummed that it was over. It’s not easy to keep him from getting bored but he truly loved his time there. Again, thank you!”
