Working Together for a Prosperous Westmoreland County: A Call for Change and Growth

As we reflect on the progress we’ve made in Westmoreland County, it's important to recognize the leadership that has guided our community. From local officials to state representatives, their efforts have been invaluable in supporting local businesses, navigating economic challenges, and preserving the values that make our county special. However, while we’ve come far, there is still much work to be done. We are at a pivotal moment where introducing new development, creating more affordable housing, improving transportation, and addressing population decline are critical to securing a prosperous future. The decisions we make today will shape Westmoreland County for generations to come.

Westmoreland County holds immense potential, but we must plan strategically to attract new businesses and residents. Development isn't just about constructing buildings—it's about fostering an environment where businesses can thrive, jobs are abundant, and people feel proud to call our community home.

One of the most urgent needs is housing. Young families and professionals are being priced out of the market, and if we want to attract new residents, we need more affordable housing options. This isn’t just about filling gaps in the market; it’s about ensuring our community is accessible to everyone—from first-time homebuyers and young professionals to the trades and aging populations. More diverse housing options can attract new talent and keep current residents invested in the county.

Along with housing, transportation infrastructure is a priority. Our current systems need to evolve to meet the demands of a growing population. Expanded public transportation options are essential for connecting our towns and cities, making it easier for people to live, work, and play in Westmoreland County. Improved roads, bridges, and public transit not only provide convenience—they lay the groundwork for sustainable economic growth.

Perhaps the most significant challenge is our shrinking population. Over 12,000 residents have left since the last census, and this decline affects every aspect of community life—fewer workers for our businesses, fewer students in our schools, and a diminished tax base to support public services. To reverse this trend, we need proactive strategies to attract new residents, retain young professionals, and welcome immigrant populations. A growing, diverse population will breathe new life into our communities and contribute to our local economy.

I applaud the work of our local and state leaders who have helped us move forward. But now is the time for all of us—residents, business owners, and community leaders—to come together for a common cause. Throughout my tenure at the Chamber, I have encountered many well-meaning silos that limit collaboration. What we need is a more cohesive, cross-sectional approach, where representatives from different communities and industries work together consistently to tackle our challenges.

The Chamber is deeply committed to addressing this critical community need, and we are dedicated to advancing our vision of collective impact into 2025. We are proud to announce our 2025 initiative, Transforming Tomorrow Together, as a testament to our shared goals and collaborative spirit.

I may be an idealist at heart, but I’ve seen firsthand how large, diverse groups working in unison can achieve meaningful, lasting change. By introducing new ideas, embracing innovation, and building consensus, we can move forward with greater buy-in and faster results. This collective approach is what will ensure the development, growth, and prosperity of Westmoreland County.
