The Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce is proud to recognize Madison Shtur, President and Founder of the Free-Op Community Store in Jeannette, as our Nonprofit of the Month for her outstanding dedication to supporting those in need.
As a Chamber Member and active participant in our Young Professionals Group, FUEL, Madison has demonstrated exceptional leadership and compassion in addressing the challenges faced by many in our community. Many people may not realize the depth of need in our region—from clothing and food to shoes, diapers, and personal care items. However, Madison saw these struggles firsthand in Jeannette and took action. Using her own resources, she opened Free-Op Community Store at 307 Clay Ave, Jeannette, creating a space where individuals and families could access essential items at a price they could afford—even if that means paying nothing at all.
“I speak to so many families who are forced to make difficult choices—whether to pay their electric bill, heat their home, or put food on the table,” Madison shared. “My vision was to help ease those tough decisions by offering a place where people can shop with dignity, pay what they can, and receive the support they need.”
Since opening its doors on December 18, 2023, Free-Op has become a vital resource for individuals and families from across the region. The store offers a variety of items, including:
- Clothing for all ages
- Personal care essentials
- Baby formula and diapers
- Home goods and toys
- An emergency food pantry in partnership with the Westmoreland Food Bank
Free-Op operates as a nonprofit thrift store with a pay-what-you-can model, ensuring that no one is turned away due to financial hardship. Whether you are a family in need or simply looking for a sustainable shopping experience, Free-Op welcomes everyone.
The Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce proudly selected Madison Shtur and Free-Op Community Store as our Nonprofit of the Month in recognition of her commitment to making a difference in the community. Madison’s passion, leadership, and dedication to helping others embody the values of service and generosity that strengthen our region.
