A Once-in-a-Generation Opportunity for Westmoreland County

As many in our business community know from last week’s media coverage, the Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce recently released the long-awaited Feasibility and Economic Impact Study for a hotel and conference center in our region. The results are not just promising—they are transformational.

This effort grew out of a clear message from local businesses and residents: the loss of the Ramada Hotel and Conference Center created a major gap in our county’s ability to attract conferences, trade shows, and events. For years, that facility hosted thousands of gatherings and drew visitors from across the country. These events fueled restaurants, retail, and tourism along the Route 30 corridor and across Westmoreland County.

To respond, the Chamber formed Destination Westmoreland, a coalition of small businesses, manufacturers, universities, healthcare providers, and community leaders. Together, we raised $25,000 to commission an independent study by CBRE Hotels, one of the nation’s most respected hospitality market analysts. The findings confirm what many of us believed: the demand is strong, the market is ready, and the benefits for our region are extraordinary.

A $720 Million Boost to Our Economy

The study projects that a 200-room, full-service, nationally branded hotel and conference center in Hempfield Township could generate $720 million in economic impact over its first decade. Among the highlights:

  • Prime Location: Route 30 corridor, adjacent to Westmoreland Mall, with direct access to I-76, major highways, and attractions such as Live! Casino, which already draws over 1 million visitors annually.
  • Modern Facilities: A 15,000-square-foot conference center, 9,000-square-foot ballroom, 60,000-square-foot event center, full-service restaurant, fitness amenities, and state-of-the-art technology.
  • Construction Impact: Nearly $90 million in one-time economic activity and almost 400 local construction jobs.
  • Visitor Spending: Over 200,000 annual visitors, with 70% new to the area—bringing fresh dollars into our economy.
  • Tax Revenue: More than $26 million in new tax revenue during the first 10 years.

Why It Matters for the Entire Region

This project is about more than bricks and mortar—it is about strengthening the economic backbone of Westmoreland County. Every event we host here means more customers in local restaurants, more sales for retailers, and more visibility for our community.

It also builds on other economic drivers. A hotel and conference center tied to the Route 30 corridor and Live! Casino will amplify revenue already supporting our region. Just last year, Live! Casino contributed $19 million through the Local Asset Share (LAS) program, helping fund municipal services, road improvements, and public safety in more than 55 communities. A conference center will expand that ripple effect even further.

At a time when malls across the nation are struggling, aligning this project with the ongoing redevelopment of Westmoreland Mall—including the potential arrival of Dick’s House of Sport—creates even greater momentum. This isn’t just about one facility; it’s about revitalizing a critical commercial corridor and positioning Westmoreland as a destination of choice for decades to come.

Moving Forward

Yes, this is a significant investment—estimated at $86 million. But the return is undeniable: more jobs, more visitors, more revenue, and more reasons for people to live, work, and stay in our community. The Chamber is proud to have brought together the right partners, asked the tough questions, and ensured the facts were gathered. Now, with the study in hand, we believe it is time to act.

This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to strengthen our economy and secure Westmoreland County’s place on the regional and national stage. Let’s seize it.
