From Momentum to Acceleration: Building Westmoreland County’s Future

As we move through 2028, we remain focused not only on where we are today—but on the strategic steps ahead that will define our future. One of those priorities is embracing emerging technologies that are reshaping the way we do business. This September, the Chamber is looking to host its first Regional AI Business Summit, bringing together leaders, innovators, and employers to explore how artificial intelligence is transforming industries, workforce needs, and economic opportunity. This initiative reflects our commitment to ensuring Westmoreland County remains competitive, forward-thinking, and prepared for what’s next.

May is a time of momentum—a point in the year when we not only see growth around us, but also measure how far we’ve come and where we’re headed. In Westmoreland County, the data tells a compelling story: our region is evolving, and our business community is leading that transformation.

Over the past year, we’ve seen steady gains in key indicators that matter—business formation, workforce participation, and regional investment. Small businesses continue to represent more than 90% of our membership base, driving innovation at the local level. At the same time, strategic investments in manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, and technology are strengthening our economic foundation and positioning Westmoreland County for long-term competitiveness.

Across our county, that momentum is visible in real ways. Companies like MSA Safety and Stellar Precision Components are advancing our manufacturing base, while Independence Health System continues to anchor one of our largest employment sectors. Our logistics and distribution network—supported by employers like US Foods and others—is expanding alongside critical infrastructure investments. At the same time, institutions like Westmoreland County Community College are ensuring our workforce pipeline keeps pace with demand, and emerging technology-driven businesses are reshaping how we think about growth and innovation. These are not isolated successes—they are signals of a region moving forward with purpose.

One of the most significant developments shaping our future is the recent integration of Independence Health System with WVU Medicine—a transformational move that underscores the scale of opportunity in Westmoreland County. This partnership brings our region into a leading academic health network and is supported by a substantial long-term investment to modernize facilities, expand clinical services, and enhance access to care. Beyond healthcare delivery, this level of investment reinforces one of our most critical economic sectors—supporting thousands of jobs, strengthening workforce development, and positioning our region as a hub for high-quality, innovative care. It is a clear example of how strategic partnerships can drive both economic growth and improved quality of life.

But data alone doesn’t define our future—how we respond to it does.

We know that workforce challenges remain one of the most critical issues facing employers today. Across industries, businesses continue to report difficulty finding qualified talent. That’s why the Chamber is doubling down on workforce alignment—bringing together education, industry, and community partners to build clear pathways from classroom to career. Our goal is simple: ensure that talent development keeps pace with business demand.

At the same time, the way we do business is changing. Digital adoption, automation, and artificial intelligence are no longer future concepts—they are present-day realities. Companies that embrace these tools are seeing measurable gains in productivity and growth. As a Chamber, we are committed to helping our members access the resources, education, and networks needed to stay competitive in this evolving landscape.

Looking ahead, our vision for Westmoreland County is bold but achievable:
A region where businesses launch, grow, and scale… where talent chooses to stay and build careers… and where innovation drives sustainable economic growth.

To get there, we must continue to think regionally, act collaboratively, and invest strategically. That means advocating for smart policy, supporting entrepreneurship, and ensuring that our infrastructure—both physical and digital—meets the demands of a modern economy.

The path forward is not about maintaining momentum—it’s about accelerating it.

Westmoreland County is not waiting for the future. We are building it.

Thank you for your continued commitment to our Chamber and our business community.
