September Non-Profit of the Month: Gem Theater
Originally opened in 1916, the Gem Theater in Derry holds a century-long legacy within its walls. In its early years, it was a vibrant hub for entertainment, showcasing silent movies and Vaudeville acts—a glimpse into the golden era of live performance. Over time, it transitioned to include small live theater performances, adapting to the changing tastes of the community. However, by 1972, the curtains fell for the last time as a functioning movie theater, and the building closed its doors to the public. Since then, businesses have come and gone in its location.
In the early 1990s, Joan Reynolds breathed new life into the space. Having started her home-based business, Joan’s Quality Baked Goods, she purchased the building to house her growing business needs. But her vision extended beyond pastries. Remembering the building’s roots and understanding her local community, Joan re-opened the theater space—not for commercial shows, but as a creative haven for local high school students. It became a cherished venue where young people could play music, perform, and express themselves in a supportive local setting. Her effort was a community-focused revival of the arts and gave a creative space to local youth. Local groups to play at Gem Theater during this time that went on to larger success include The Juliana Theory & God’s Green Apples, among others. The final show at Gem Theater occurred in October of 1999, and Joan sold the building soon after.
More than a decade later, in 2012, Joan repurchased the property. Though it has mainly served as storage and a living space since then, the spark never died. In 2024, Joan formally founded The Friends of Gem Theater, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit initiative with a bold and heartfelt mission: to encourage the appreciation and development of all forms of art, while serving as a springboard project that will assist in the revitalization of the local business district. Once restored and re-opened, Joan’s vision is to utilize the Gem Theater as a multi-use cultural space. This would include hosting plays, concerts, community events, and providing a much-needed creative outlet for local youth and artists. While the building requires significant renovations, community fundraising efforts are underway to bring this historic space back to life—this time as a beacon for creativity and connection in the heart of the town.
At this time, The Friends of Gem Theater are looking to add board members who are interested in performing arts and revitalizing the theater space. The Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce would like to celebrate Joan’s mission and wish quick success to restore an old staple of the Derry community.
