January Non-Profit of the Month: Westmoreland Food Bank

The Westmoreland Food Bank was established in 1982 with the mission to make sure everyone in our community has access to the nutritious food they need to thrive. The Westmoreland Food Bank has strived to help all local communities within Westmoreland County ever since they opened their doors.

Going back to 2024 (2025’s yearly statistics are not yet available), the Westmoreland Food Bank distributed 1.7 million pounds of produce, 6.4 million pounds of food, and were able to serve over 8,000 households each month to people in need.

The end of 2025 has been challenging for the Westmoreland Food Bank to keep up with their demand due to SNAP benefits being temporarily frozen from the Federal Government shutdown – They estimated a 300% increase in referrals and demand in November, which they were able to meet with the help and generosity of our community members.

Jennifer Miller – Westmoreland Food Bank’s CEO – states that people in our local communities aren’t just looking for help during the Holidays, rather they are looking for help all year round. By offering innovative food programs such as their Pantry Program, Fresh Express, and Mobile Market, Westmoreland Food Bank is working to win the fight against hunger by providing healthy and nutritious foods to our neighbors and friends throughout Westmoreland County all year round.

How You Can Help – As the years go on, it has been crucial for Westmoreland Food Bank to adapt to changes, as is with any other business or non-profit organization. In 2000, 10% of Westmoreland Food Bank’s annual budget came from donations. Now, over 60% of their budget comes from donations. They kindly ask that you consider donating to a wonderful cause, where they have set up one time and monthly donation options – termed their “Good Apples Club” – which they are focusing on growing. They also have drop off locations around the county where individuals can drop off any food donations. Drop off locations can be found on their website. Additionally, volunteer opportunities are always available!

Currently, the Westmoreland Food Bank is undergoing a construction project at their location in Delmont which will expand their cooler capacity by 100%, offer an on-site food pantry for the first time in their history, and add more amenities for volunteers such as lockers, a kitchenette, and increased staff parking spaces. A newly established volunteer center is also a part of the project, where a new space to host small to medium sized meetings is being built. They are also hiring CDL class A or B drivers to add to their team.

The Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce is honored to present this month’s Non-Profit of the Month award to the Westmoreland Food Bank. Keep up the great work!
