November Non-Profit of the Month: United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania

For nearly 100 years, United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania has improved lives by mobilizing the caring power of community. Working with individuals, businesses and organizations, United Way helps people in Allegheny, Armstrong, Butler, Fayette and Westmoreland counties to measurably improve their lives and create long-lasting change for the betterment of our community.

United Way makes three-year investments so that partner agencies have budgetary stability and know they can continue to count on United Way for funding. These dollars are awarded through a competitive request for proposal process to agencies that align with United Way’s investment priorities of meeting basic needs, moving to financial stability and building for success in school and life.

Last year, United Way raised $38.4 million and provided assistance to 1.48 million people. This includes $787,000 in investments annually in 30 Westmoreland partner agencies, who used these resources to assist nearly 60,000 county residents.

United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania also manages the 211 contact center for 30 counties in Pennsylvania, including Westmoreland. Our highly trained and compassionate operators, known as resource navigators, are available by phone, text and chat 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year. These compassionate individuals assess the needs of each person and offer connections to more than 7,000 agencies that update their listings with us regularly. Last year, 150,000 people in 30 counties contacted PA 211 Southwest and connected to a real person by phone, text, email or chat for human services referrals. An estimated 459,500 more people searched the PA 211 resource database to connect directly to agencies that can help.

The Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce is honored to present this month’s Non-Profit of the Month award to the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania. Keep up the great work you do for our community and we are grateful for our continued partnership.
